Since it is an open-source content management system (CMS), anyone is free to download, install, use, and modify the program as they see fit. Although they might seem identical, WordPress.org is different from WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a commercial service that uses the open-source WordPress.org platform and charges users for access. While it’s easy to set up and use, it lacks the customization options of a self-hosted WordPress site.
When people refer to “WordPress,” they typically mean the self-hosted version available through WordPress.org. If you prefer complete control over your blog, a WordPress.org site hosted on your own server is the way to go.
